2008’s “The Strangers” didn’t initially seem like a film that would lead to a series. However, it is now set to transform into “The Strangers Trilogy,” featuring three films directed by Renny Harlin that act as both a remake and a prequel to Bryan Bertino’s original hit. In the 2008 movie, an ordinary couple, portrayed by Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, faces terror in a secluded vacation home at the hands of three masked intruders. This film is a strong example of genre filmmaking, as is the somewhat lesser sequel, “The Strangers: Prey at Night,” largely due to the absence of a clear motive behind the horror. When Tyler’s character, Kristen, asks why they are being targeted, Gemma Ward’s Dollface chillingly responds, “Because you were home.” What could be more frightening than senseless violence? And why would anyone feel the need to explore the backstories of the Man in the Mask, Pin-Up Girl, and Dollface?

I typically don’t judge a film (or trilogy, in this case) solely based on its concept. It’s possible that the upcoming two installments in this trilogy, set to be released in the next year, won’t undermine the elements that contributed to the success of “The Strangers.” Honestly, it’s too early to tell since “The Strangers: Chapter 1” essentially rehashes Bertino’s film, concluding with a post-credits scene that teases a potentially more ambitious sequel. This installment mostly follows the familiar path of a horror remake, often feeling like a pale imitation of the original. Harlin brings his reliable craftsmanship to the project—he’s adept at this genre; one can only hope it doesn’t leave viewers feeling sleepy as well.

Maya (Madelaine Petsch, known for “Riverdale”) and Ryan (Froy Gutierrez) are on a cross-country trip when they take a wrong turn and find themselves in a small town that doesn’t appear on most GPS devices. While stopping at a diner for a bite to eat, they encounter some locals, including the Sheriff.
